Numerous are the hematological alterations presented by patients referring to the Hospital, and they may affect all the cellular lines of the peripheral blood. Due to the objective limitations in terms of time availability, this talk will mainly examine the most frequent haematological alterations occurring in the clinical setting of an Unit of Internal Medicine. By means of a retrospective analysis on a sample of 240 consecutive patients referred to an Internal Medicine Unit, the most frequent alterations were resulted: normochromic-normocytic anemia, leucocytosis with neutrophilia, and -much less important – thrombocytopenia/thrombocytosis. For this reason, the discussion will be focused on the first two conditions, i.e. the normochromic-normocytic anemia and the leucocytosis with neutrophilia. Finally, because of practical relevance and growing speculative interest, the anemia associated with heart failure and chronic renal insufficiency (defining the so called “cardio-renal syndrome”) will be also discussed.
