Haematological abnormalities, similar to those found in primitive non-hematologic diseases that occur in other body systems, may be present also in gastrointestinal diseases. However, in gastrointestinal diseases they may have specific features related to the anatomical and functional characteristics of this system. These features strongly influence the shape and the intensity of the expression in hematological abnormalities, which often recognize multi-factorial and complex etiopathogenetic causes. The wide range of diseases affecting the gastrointestinal system may be complicated or even revealed as the first note of pathology by haematological signs. Together with other methods of investigation, the clinical laboratory can contribute substantially to the early diagnosis and classification of patients during treatment and follow-up by means of basic tests such as CBC, or more sophisticated and last generation tests. This paper reviews the main haematological disorders most frequently associated to gastroenterological diseseas.
