The quality of biologic samples is a needed but not sufficient condition for the quality of laboratory results. Recent international guidelines and recommendations, procedures for quality and performance control, and indicators of extra-analytical phase quality focused on the sample acceptability. Automatic tools for the assessment of “serum indices” have been proposed. Nevertheless, adequate quality assurance of sample is assured only by the control of the analytical and postanalytical phases and by the cooperation between the Laboratory and other healthcare professionals, especially nurses. This is an essential task for the Laboratory Medicine professionals.
