The prolongation of the average lifespan and the consequent aging of the population increase the problem of nursing chronic patients. The common trend is to support the outpatient setting and to increase home care this, especially in rural areas, can be well supported by self-management and policies of direct responsibility ad self-control. The judicial basis concerning the need of controlled management in analytic procedures performed outside the central laboratory lies in a regional law (Piemonte Region n. 21 of the 14/5/91) and its successive modifications. Error prevention in Laboratory Medicine comes from careful control of each phase that can alter the final quality of the exams, monitoring and reshaping all processes leading to the ultimate result, the laboratory direction’s accountability in monitor clinical effectiveness and quality implementation cycles through clinical audit procedure. Thus comes the need that the Laboratory itself, with is own unreplaceable expertise, protects and support these “peripheral analitycal procedure”, thus becoming the benchmark for the patient in need.
