A series of diagnostic tests have been proposed for the diagnosis of food allergy. They include many non – traditional tests, but the only tests to be used are tests whose accuracy has been validated against the gold standard test – the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge. These include skin prick test, measurement of IgE concentration against allergens and atopy patch tests. Elimination diets and food diary symptom card can be used in selected cases. In Italy, we need to implement the practice of diagnostic challenge using appropriate methods.
