Background. CME (Continuous Medical Education)
programs give the laboratory technicians the opportunity
to upgrade their professional knowledge.
This study aimed to explore their professional
needs.
Methods. In the year 2001, the Sardinian section of
the Italian Society of Laboratory Medicine (SIMeL)
organized several meetings in Cagliari, Sassari and
Nuoro, gathering a group of volunteer laboratory
technicians. During these meetings, the technicians
were asked to fill in and answer an anonymous questionnaire,
containing 15 questions about their professional
upgrade. Sixty five questionnaires were
collected, and the answers were elaborated and expressed
as percentage.
Results. From the results obtained, it was detailed
the great importance attributed to the professional
upgrade by technicians. 98 % considered it essential
for maintaining a high standard professionalism; on
the other hand, 71% considered it almost unexisting.
