The Laboratory Hematology
Since its birth, the Hematology is both a laboratory
(morphologic and technologic) and clinical discipline.
During the second half of the past century, the hematology
laboratory has become a world remote from the clinician,
because of both technical progress, i.e. the flow-cytometry,
and remarkable scientific advances, especially the genetic
and molecular revolution. Thus, the concept of Laboratory
Hematology is challenged.
Nevertheless, the continue role of the optical and
“cytometric” morphology in case-finding and diagnosis,
the need of integration of all available information, including
genetic, immunophenotypic, biologic, clinical and
morphologic features for the classification of hematopoietic
and lymphoid neoplasm, the growing importance of the
laboratory measurements in the so-called “nonhematological
hematology”, support the idea of an actual
laboratory hematology diagnostic logic. It is based on solid
medical and technologic knowledge, on the integration of
the diagnostic information by different tools, on a correct
and effective process of validation and interpretation of
the findings, on an “expressive” results for the effectiveness
of the clinical action, and on a two-ways communication
with the clinicians for an appropriate and efficient use of
the Hematology Laboratory.
