Overview:
In the last 10 years, cartridge-based viscoelastic testing (VET) has emerged and significantly improved testing precision and expanded the availability of VET. However, these innovations are associated with increased cost and VET must be applied in situations that will benefit patient diagnosis and management. The proven utility of VET is for transfusion management; institutions should develop protocols for VET-based transfusion of bleeding patients through collaboration of clinical and laboratory staff.
Learning Objectives:
-
Understand the principles of viscoelastic testing (VET), including next-generation VET methodologies available in the last decade.
-
Apply literature on the use of VET for 1) transfusion guidance in various acquired bleeding disorders, and 2) assessing bleeding risk and guiding factor replacement in congenital bleeding disorders.
-
Assess the patient care situations where VET offers the most benefit.
